The state of California has signed into law a ban on most flavored tobacco products starting January 1, 2021. It appears companies have reverted to old tactics of identifying and targeting younger, vulnerable populations for gateways to tobacco addiction. While "Joe Camel", "Smooth Character", and "Marlboro Man" were identified as means to attract younger smokers and since banned by the FCC, new products are following similar advertising campaigns. New flavors are more "kid-friendly" and include "fruit, vanilla, honey, candy, cocoa, dessert, alcoholic beverage, menthol, mint, wintergreen, herb or spice" flavors. As a result, almost 20% of high school students report using e-cigarettes, up from 1.5% in 2011.

We applaud the response of the California legislature to be proactive in curbing nicotine addiction.
